Chapter 05 · The Door

Reservations, Hours & Getting Here

When we are open, how the booking system really works, your odds as a walk-in, and the quickest way from the Métro to a table.

Public holidays9:00 – 16:009:00 – 15:3014:00

We close on 25 December, 1 January and 1 May. From roughly 10 to 24 August the kitchen team takes its holiday and we run a pastry-and-coffee counter only, from 8:00 to 14:00. Pastries and coffee to take away are available until the doors close every day.

Reservations versus walk-ins

We hold about sixty percent of the seats for reservations and keep the remaining forty percent for people who simply turn up, so the front room is never entirely booked out. Reservations can be made for two to six people; anything larger is a group booking and is handled through the events guide. A table for two is held for ninety minutes, a table for four to six for two hours, and we hold a booking for fifteen minutes past the reserved time before releasing it. On Saturdays and Sundays we ask for a card to secure the table; a no-show or a cancellation with less than four hours' notice is charged €10 per person. Weekday bookings need no card. Bookings open twenty-one days ahead and the busiest weekend slots — 11:00 to 13:00 — typically fill within forty-eight hours of release.

Getting here

The address is 27 Rue de Bretagne, in the Haut-Marais, a few doors from the Marché des Enfants Rouges.

  • Métro: Filles du Calvaire (line 8) is a four-minute walk; Arts et Métiers (lines 3 and 11) six minutes; Temple (line 3) five minutes; République (lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11) about eight minutes.
  • Bus: routes 75, 91 and 96 stop within two hundred metres.
  • Bicycle: there is a Vélib' station on Rue de Bretagne itself and covered racks on Rue Charlot. We will look after a folding bike inside.
  • Car: the streets are narrow and mostly one-way. The nearest public car park is on Rue Beaubourg, about ten minutes on foot. We do not recommend driving.

Accessibility

The front door is step-free from the pavement and 90 cm wide. There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor, and eight of the front-room tables have 75 cm of clearance for wheelchair users. The Salon has a single step of 12 cm; we keep a portable ramp and will set it up on request. Menus are available in large print, and staff are happy to read the specials aloud. Assistance dogs are welcome everywhere in the building.

"Forty percent of the room is always for walk-ins. On a weekday, the honest answer to 'do I need to book?' is no."

House policies

  • Dogs are welcome in the front room and on the terrace, not in the Salon during private events.
  • Laptops are welcome on weekdays before 11:30 and after 14:30. At weekends and weekday lunch the tables are for eating and talking. There are six sockets along the bar and free Wi-Fi.
  • Children of any age are welcome; four highchairs, half portions, and a small step stool by the pastry counter.
  • Payment: cards, contactless, cash, and Titres-Restaurant on weekdays. Service is included; a tip is never expected.
  • Terrace seating is unbooked and first-come, from April to October, weather permitting.
